DO NOT START OUT AT A BIG COMPANY

Our world is fast evolving and the way things are done is completely different from 10 years ago. It used to be hard to secure a good job without a professional and recognised qualification. However, these days it is possible if you how you know what you talking about and also show you are more than capable. Companies want someone who will add value to them at the most affordable price.

As you go along with your journey as a developer, you may get recommended or may find yourself landing a job a bit earlier on with not as much experience as you would usually need. I know I shouldn't be writing about this as yet since a job is the last thing one should worry about when starting out, but it does happen that you land a job, especially if you are a fast learner.

Now the one thing you must avoid if you ever land or plan to apply for a job, is big companies. Avoid companies which have a lot of developers in them. Sound wrong because "you want to learn from the best" right? Well, unfortunately, with big teams, jobs are divided. In the beginning, you are not yet quite sure what you may enjoy most, and being assigned to just one specific part of the development phase may leave you lacking in many. That is why you should focus on SMME companies if you want to grow.

Companies which are not too big often have just enough developers and a lot of work that they handle. This is where you will get full hands on experience. Sometimes QAs and Testers might be caught up in major projects, and you will be forced to do the testing and quality assurance. You might have to handle a whole project from back-end to front-end(Something you might not experience in a big company). Sometimes you will have to work with databases in order to complete your project. But with big companies, things are streamlined and you may just find yourself doing just one task, while another does the other task. This is good for efficiency but as a beginner, it prevents you from discovering the beauty of software development and all the stages from Design to Full Product.

Remember this when sending out that CV and Portfolio.
